Butterbur Extract Urovex™ 50 mg by Planetary Herbals ® against migraines
The extract from petasites hybridus (also known as butterbur or bog rhubarb) is standardised by 16% sesquiterpenes, which shows the two main active ingredients, petasin and isopetasin.
Petasin can reduce the spasms in smooth muscles and in the vascular walls. It is responsible for the antispasmodic properties of the extract from petasite and explains its interest in the case of urinary disorders, menstrual cramps, migraines, kidney stones - disorders associated with spasms of the smooth muscles. Petasin can also inhibit the synthesis of leukotrienes, while isopetasin has a positive effect on the metabolism of prostaglandins, two crucial components in the cascade of inflammations.
Properties of the compound:

The "common butterbur", with the botanical name petasites officinalis and commonly also known as bog rhubarb, devil's hat and pestilence wort, is practically spread throughout Europe and especially grows on moist creek or river banks as well as wet fields. Especially its giant leaves growing to a diameter of up to one metre are significant. The plants owes its effect on numerous diseases to the substance petasites. In cloister medicine butterbur was used as a diuretic and diaphoretic but also to soothe coughs.
In recent research, the butterbur extract has shown to be a significantly effective and well tolerated option in migraine prevention. This is the result of a meta-analysis of known and new migraine prophylactics introduced at the German Pain Convention in Frankfurt by Prof. H. Göbel, Chief Physician at the Pain Clinic Kiel.
71% of migraine patients had at least 50% less occurrences (responders) with butterbur; on average the migraine attacks were decreased by 48% and tolerance was excellent. This is how Göbel summarised the most crucial results of the international placebo-controlled Petadolex study with 233 patients.
This puts the petasites speciality extract in the top rankings of effectiveness compared to other prophylactics, per Göbel, comparable to 1st choice prescription medicines, such as e.g. the beta blockers Propanolol and Timolol. The organic compound is clearly superior in tolerance.
Even children benefit from organic migraine prophylaxes
The potency and great tolerance of the organic compound is also confirmed in children, per the results of an open prospective study in 108 patients. 86 % of 6-9 year olds (n=18) and 74 % of the 10-17 year olds (n=43) experienced a reduction of the frequency of attacks by at least 50% (responders) with the organic therapy. The organic compound should be part of every paediatrician's repertoire, recommends renowned Paediatric Neurologist Dr. R. Pothmann, Ev. Hospital Oberhausen, Germany.
Proven pharmacological effect
The "Butterbur" compound consists of a special extract derived from the rootstock of the butterbur (petasites hybridus). A patented process completely filters out the pyrrolizidine alkaloids, which are toxic to the liver! The OTC medicine has an anti-inflammatory, anti-convulsant and analgesic effect. Petasines are accountable for the pharmacologic powers.
